Lauren is a New Englander who identifies as a Mom first and foremost. She has her Masters in Child Development and works in the mental health field. Lauren works with both children in group homes, and single mothers who need assistance finding jobs. Writing has always been Lauren's main passion. "Kind Katie" is her first children's book, and shares a message dear to heart: kindness is a superpower that can change the world. She resides in Rhode Island with her fiancé, their four year old daughter, and bernerdoodle Buster.

It’s Katie’s first day at a new school. She’s very nervous as she doesn’t know anyone. When the alarm goes off, she wants to stay in bed and hide from the world. But she can’t hide forever. Her parents get her out the door and onto the school bus. At school, she meets her new teacher, who she thinks is nice. But when she sits at her desk, she realizes she’s forgotten her backpack at home. As she fusses with shoelaces, she remembers her mother’s sage words, “Be kind to others, that should always be your plan./ Kindness can change the world, it definitely can!” Following her mother’s words, she reaches out to the girl next to her and soon has a new friend. All through the day, Katie shows kindness to others and reaps the rewards of being a super-kind new student. At home, her parents present her with a gift that makes her feel even more special, more kind.
Lauren Cardoso’s picture book, Kind Katie, is a real gem. During an uncertain era when everyone is unsettled about going anywhere, especially somewhere new, this story speaks from the heart with care and compassion, and, yes, kindness. The story is told in rhyming verse, which will definitely appeal to the young reader. The colorful illustrations help move the story along. The plot develops steadily and the young readers will certainly fall in love with the main character Kind Katie herself. I know I did. This is a sweet little story that will capture the hearts of young readers and their older caregivers who will be helping them read it.
