Killer Flip by M.E. Bakos is the fourth book in the Home Renovator Mystery series. Home renovation can be deadly. Known home rehab specialist Katelyn has been given an incredible opportunity. She brings new life to a Tudor home which comes with a charming exterior, lavish furnishings, and a torrid history. The former owner was trapped in a snowstorm, only to be found dead later. When she uncovers surprising clues in the house, she begins to wonder what happened to the previous owner. When the mystery deepens, she finds herself facing another challenge. Katelyn hasn't had the best luck in the romance department with two marriages behind her but now it would seem that her boyfriend thinks the third time will be different. Is she ready for more wedding bells or will she find it easier to chase after a killer?
Katelyn has a specific skill set to give houses new life with her perceptive eye and the help of her best friend and muse. The Tudor house is at the center of the plot with the unsolved murder of the former owner which creates a tantalizing mystery and the ideal backdrop with plenty of secrets. The setting has a vivid aesthetic with bulky sweaters, gorgeous scenery, and Halloween decorations such as artificial spiders on fake webs, a flower shop with a Munster theme, and carved pumpkins. The use of fall provides an ideal backdrop to this charming town with cheery surroundings and a fun vibe that makes you feel the season come to life.
M.E. Bakos has a fun writing style with delightful details. Katelyn is a well-rounded character with a background that remains a strong influence in reference to her hippie mother and drill sergeant father and dysfunctional family. A charming writing style makes use of asides. Bakos has a style that gives substance to the town through Katelyn's perspective of it such as feeling the eyes of Crocus Heights (the town) watching her. If you love renovation and murder mysteries, Killer Flip is a perfect read.
