Barry Finlay reached retirement age, content with his lifetime achievements. However, circumstances beyond his control were fixed on thrusting him into a whole new challenge. He and his son, Chris, made the decision to climb Kilimanjaro! Why and how are outlined extensively, with much detail and humor and humility in their book, "Kilimanjaro and Beyond". The planning stages, the preparation and finally the climb, take you along on their journey; one of incredible accomplishment through Barry and Chris Finlay’s determination and perseverance to be the best that they could be. Their focus, of course, is to reach the top of the mountain, and not just any mountain, it is 19,000 feet of volcano! In so doing, the intention is to reward their many supporters and duly repay them for their unfailing backing. Finally, after exhaustive and often dangerous effort, they reach more than one goal. One step leads to another greater one – but you’ll have to read the book to find out what it is!
"Kilimanjaro and Beyond" is a story of strength, strong will and determination. I found the story profoundly touching in parts. Overcoming health issues and fear, two ordinary men achieve extraordinary results and touch the lives of many, because they choose to try something new. I got a little overwhelmed with the extensive details, which I realize was absolutely necessary to the overall story; but then I am not a mountain climber and have not had to organize such a major adventure. The italics were somewhat difficult to read on my e-reader, but rest assured, the book is well worth reading. Engrossing story and what comes after is nothing short of incredible!
