In Keep Her Close, Erik Therme covers the story of every parent’s nightmare; the abduction of a beloved daughter. Ally is the daughter of Dan and Holly, adopted by them when she was found abandoned in a parking garage at the age of three. Holly and Dan have since divorced but have remained on good terms. On several occasions, Ally attempted to discover her birth parents but had no luck until the day she receives a letter from her father who only has a short time left to live. Dan does not believe it is authentic but, undeterred, Ally sets off to meet him with unexpected and traumatic results. The plot involves Cal, a workmate seriously in love with Ally, but who in turn is loved by her best friend Ellie. The stage is set for disaster with other family members hovering in the wings.
I was impressed by Erik Therme’s characters in Keep Her Close. They leap off the page, especially Dan; you can almost feel his rage as one event after another sends him spiraling down into fury. Cal is none too bright and his actions and reasoning scream this every time he appears on the page. Perhaps the prize should go to Judy. The twists and turns in her reasoning are masterful and, along with the cast, the dialogue is excellent. Towards the end, I was feverishly turning the pages to find out what happens as it was by no means obvious. A good book I would recommend if you like action and a fast-moving story with lively and believable characters.
