KeeKee’s Big Adventures in Amsterdam, Netherlands is a children’s book written by Shannon Jones and illustrated by Casey Uhelski. When KeeKee the calico kitty arrives in the Netherlands in her big hot air balloon, she is greeted by Jasper, a friendly lion who speaks Dutch. Wondering what brings KeeKee to the Netherlands, Jasper asks out of curiosity, only to learn that KeeKee wishes to see all of the wonderful sights that she had heard about. As Jasper is on his way into Amsterdam to deliver some flowers, he offers to be KeeKee’s tour guide and points out many amazing sites of interest, such as the tulip fields, windmills, and the places where wooden shoes are made. KeeKee also learns about the amazing canals and gets to sample some Dutch delicacies. On land, most residents travel by bicycle, while the most common form of transportation is via boat due to the maze of canals. A pronunciation guide and glossary are located at the end of the book, enabling the reader to study the language more closely, as is a map of Amsterdam’s most sought out tourist attractions.
As an Australian living in Finland, I know that it takes just a whiff of a different culture to get the curiosity flowing, and that is exactly what this book does. KeeKee’s Big Adventures in Amsterdam, Netherlands is the perfect launch pad for young children to develop an interest in foreign culture and languages. As the Dutch language is used in many places throughout the book, along with the English interpretation of each word or phrase, children can easily begin to learn a new language. Other factual information about Holland’s customs and its intricate history are given throughout the story, enticing the reader to want to learn more about the art, culture and museums in the Netherlands. I was impressed by both the quality and the quantity of knowledge and resources packed into such an easy-to-read format, and the illustrations brought KeeKee’s tale to life beautifully. I very much enjoyed Shannon Jones’ tale of her adventurous calico kitty and recommend this book be stocked in school, home and day-care libraries for children to enjoy, whether at nap time or as an early read-it-yourself adventure.
