Jodie Broom: The Book of the Rose is book two in Julie Hodgson’s children’s and preteen fantasy/science fiction series, with illustrations by Alexandre Vieira. Jodie keeps on revisiting the past, trying to see if she can somehow manipulate time to avert the crash that put her parents into a comatose state. She relives her last birthday party and can even feel them each giving her a birthday kiss, but deep down she realizes that neither her mom nor her dad would want her sitting by their pods and mourning. They’d want her out and experiencing life. Jodie loves time travelling, and her library card allows her to do just that. While the dreadful librarian, Ms. Noble, has confiscated most of the children’s library cards to keep them from time traveling, Jodie’s friends - Otso, Kai and the troll Mooshka - have made it possible for Jodie to continue her jaunts through history. Jodie is from 2075 and visiting Otso at his farm in 1955 is one of her favorite things to do.
Julie Hodgson’s children’s and preteen time travel/adventure story, Jodie Broom: The Book of the Rose, Book Two, is an exciting and educational look at history seen first hand by Jodie and her friends, Pac Man and Kai. While this is the second book in the series, Hodgson’s inclusion of pertinent details from the first book allows this book to be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. I love books and quests, so Jodie’s quest for Otso’s special book was exactly what I would be looking for, even if I haven’t fitted into the target age category in quite some time. Jodie is a history buff who loves Victorian times and following her through the streets of 19th century London was a treat. Alexandre Vieira’s illustrations are marvelous and do an admirable job of bringing the characters and their adventures to life. Jodie Broom: The Book of the Rose, Book Two is original and very entertaining, and I learned something while I was having fun reading it. It’s highly recommended.
