It Stinks to be Pink!, written and illustrated by Kathryn L. Novak, is an excellent children's book focusing on the topic of self-esteem; whether someone is struggling with self-esteem or someone just needing reminders as to why he or she is special. Spotty is a fuzzipuff, living in a beautiful place and seemingly living a wonderful life. However, Spotty does not want to join in activities and play like the other fuzzipuff children do. The others thought that Spotty was always mad and he did not like the other children. However, that was not the case as Spotty was afraid and sad because he was pink and looked different from everyone else. Spotty feels as if no one understands him and he cannot explain himself to anyone else, so Spotty makes a big decision and sets off alone.
Struggling with self-esteem and feeling good about one's self can be an issue that many children deal with and Kathryn L. Novak has created a character and a story to help address this subject with children. Spotty, a pink fuzzipuff child, is the main character is her book It Stinks to be Pink! and, through Spotty, children will learn to accept and appreciate their differences and be comfortable in their own skin. Kathryn begins with an introduction about this book and the purpose of it - to help children build their self-esteem and as a result lead happier lives. Then Spotty is introduced and his story is told in four chapters, allowing the reader to take his or her time to focus and reflect on each section of Spotty's story. This is a great resource to use with children and I highly recommend it.
