Incitatus is the first book in the Aphelion series by Jakub Wisz. A science fiction novel set in the fictional world of Aphelion in the near future, the story takes twists and turns when you least expect them. Shao was tired of living the same old boring life of a spaceship pilot. While her father had her best interests at heart, Shao craved something more. When she came across a mysterious data chip that seemingly led to a pirate treasure, Shao somehow convinced her crew to ditch their job and chase the treasure. However, very soon Shao realized that things were not what she was expecting, and she put herself, her crew, and her girlfriend Mai at high risk. But there was no going back now. Shao, Mai, and the rest of the crew had to survive the “adventure” and all the dangers in their path and get back home in one piece.
I loved how Incitatus was built over time. The narrative and the pace created a sense of safety for me before author Jakub Wisz surprised me with the first twist. After that, it was a steady stream of twists and turns that made the story complex yet undeniably entertaining. The world-building was outstanding, something I was expecting, but the author blew my mind away with how intricate everything was. The details were so rich and vivid that I felt like I was right there beside Shao. Shao’s character was a little idealistic at first, but she adapted well, especially when Mai’s life was threatened along with her crew. Zhenya was my second favorite character. He was a realist and perhaps far too intelligent for Shao to understand at times. This story was more fantastic than I expected, and I had very high expectations!
