In the Black by Andrew Ceroni is a military thriller that is fast-paced and suspenseful. In this page-turning tale, every second counts as the CIA’s most valued Russian agents are assassinated. Alexei Savasin is discovered shot to death in Montmartre, Paris, and Vanya Stepanov is dead as well. Who will be the next double agent to be killed and is it the KGB or a mole in the CIA taking them out, one by one? The race to save those who are still alive is the top priority for the agency. But can they capture the traitor before it is too late? Meanwhile, Agent Dave McClure is on a deadly mission to save one of the most prized CIA assets, Dr. Armand Mishenkov, who is doing important research in cold fusion. Follow him on a race to find and smuggle Armand from Russia through Europe to the US as the odds stack up through every move he makes.
Andrew Ceroni’s dazzling prose and propulsive storytelling craft pulled me in from the first page and the clever plotting had me turning the pages. I was enthralled by the suspense in this captivating, fresh story with characters that I adored. Dave McClure is a character that readers will enjoy, a man who has a penchant for thinking outside the box and almost always correctly so. He is a well-developed character and I enjoyed how his relationship with Karen fits into the story and deepens it. The characters are sophisticated, and even the way that Armand is developed will entice any reader. While he is a treasure trove for the CIA, he is also an important person to the Russians, which is why they can’t let him leave the country. The author writes characters that are compelling. In the Black is very good, with the author’s unique trademark for plotting and writing dialogues that move the story in unexpected directions. A wonderful read!
