I’m Back! More Adventures of Hazel Flick and her pesky pup, Fanny is a humorous adventure/sleuth novella written and illustrated by Rachel Druten. Hazel Flick was not about to let herself be turned into the housekeeper and bed-and-breakfast host for her daughter’s dysfunctional family. In her first book, Druten describes how Hazel makes her great escape and recounts the adventures and misadventures she encounters along the way. In this book, Hazel is now happily living at the Paradise Senior Living apartments in Palm Desert, where she shares a delightful garden apartment with her best pal, Fanny, her Papillon. Her human best friend, Louise, lives five minutes away by car, though a nice walk takes only about twenty minutes. Life is good for this spry and active woman who is, incidentally, an undercover operative for the DEA. So what could go wrong?
I’m Back! More Adventures of Hazel Flick and her pesky pup is a fun and fast-paced look at life conducted in Hazel Flick’s own distinct and very appealing style. I love her sense of adventure and independent spirit, and her easy camaraderie with her Papillon will probably make any dog lover smile. I especially appreciated how easily she is able to make Fanny a part of the action at all times. Each of the adventures contained in this collection is entertaining and often suspenseful, and Druten’s characters are credible and well-defined. Druten’s pen and ink illustrations are brilliant and work very well to bring Hazel and her world to life. I had a grand time getting to know Hazel and am looking forward to reading about her further adventures. I’m Back! More Adventures of Hazel Flick and her pesky pup is most highly recommended.
