I Wonder if a Star Will Fall is an anthology assembled by Joe Gantz. The stories in it are written by children and chosen from thousands of submissions. The stories range in topic and tone. Some are records of the lives of the children themselves. Others are fictional stories that the children created. Some are happy, others silly. Some are sad and tragic. All of them are included exactly as they were written, word for word. The children’s own handwriting and scribbled illustrations adorn the pages, adding to the magic of seeing the tales from their point of view.
Seeing the world from the perspective of children, exactly as they’ve chosen to share it, is a privilege usually reserved for schoolteachers and parents. Thanks to Joe Gantz, we can explore the world through this perspective on the pages of I Wonder if a Star Will Fall. While most of the stories in this anthology are lighthearted and adorable, a fair number are also sad and thought-provoking. The sheer range of emotions that come through when a child is asked to tell a story is simply mind-blowing. The depths of sorrow that they convey in simple, but deeply impactful ways will stay with you for years to come. The silliness, the joy, and the lightheartedness of some of the stories will lift your spirits and bring brightness to even a bleak day. I highly recommend this wonderful compilation to anyone who enjoys raw, real emotion, and would like a chance to view the world through the lens of childlike wonder one more time.
