I Was Small But Now I’m Tall is a wonderful book showing how one child overcame numerous challenges and emerged victoriously. This feel-good story may help other children born prematurely or others struggling with challenges. Author Jennifer Degl offers encouragement for children and their parents who may be experiencing problems reaching milestones like other growing children. I like the comparisons of her size - “And I weighed 2 ounces less than a basketball” - so people get a true feeling of how small and light she really was. Imagine holding a baby in the palm of your hand. Children will love the rhyming words, while parents will enjoy the subtle messages.

I Was Small But Now I’m Tall is a rhyming story that takes readers on a journey of growth starting with a premature baby who grows cautiously hour by hour and then year by year. Author Jennifer Degl has weaved subtle messages of hope into this easy-to-read children’s book. Illustrator Jennifer Lynn Becker really likes geometric shapes, which you can easily find in her artwork. It could be a game to play with children: do you see a circle, a square, or a rectangle? Looking at the artwork in a children’s picture book helps to keep them involved. Can you find something blue? Or, can you see a man or a baby? The full-page illustrations contain pastel colors that place you in the hospital with the anxious waiting parents. This book would be a wonderful present for parents who are gifted with a special child—a little too soon.
