Harrison Martin uses a simple story to introduce children to various animals, many of which are unlikely to be considered pets. I Still Don't Want a Pet highlights how children can often feel neglected when parents give more attention to a new baby. Even though many children would love to have pets, they are never a substitute for their parents' love and attention. In the end, it turns out that Jen would rather go out with her parents for doughnuts, as her actual desire is to engage with them in her favorite activity.
I just had to laugh at some of the animals mentioned that I definitely would not consider as a pet. Young children will enjoy the repetition in the story and will quickly recognize familiar words like a lion, wolf, duck, spider, and the like. They will also learn new and more challenging words like bumblebee, manatee, cockatoo, badger, and chinchilla. They will learn the names of unfamiliar animals like clam, newt, or squid. The simple, colorful illustrations will show them what each animal looks like. Children will soon be able to read many words with you, adding to their enjoyment of this book. If they have to adapt to a new baby in the house, they still will enjoy precious reading time with their parents. I Still Don't Want a Pet by Harrison Martin will remind parents how strong-willed some children can be. But it also makes them realize that they should sometimes look deeper for the reason behind that stubbornness!
