I recently had the opportunity to read and review I Met My Saviour by Betty Marcum. Betty begins her memoirs by discussing her childhood and how she met her husband, Billy. Her fond memories continue as she shares precious moments from each of the places where Billy Marcum pastored. I recognized the names of many of the towns and some of the churches. She recounts her fear after someone tried to break into the parsonage. Her first attempt at cooking brought a smile to my face as did the chapter on learning to drive. The section on their first child had me laughing. They were so afraid he would get cold they kept him bundled up in every blanket he had. Like most pastors' families, the Marcums often moved and left friends behind, but kept them in their heart. Many will be touched by their ministry at Brandenburg, KY in the year 1974. The year of the tornado. Brandenburg was hit hard, the church parsonage and the church were gone. Thirty-one people died that day in Brandenburg, KY.
Betty Marcum’s book I Met My Saviour is a sweet retelling of history that will please not only her family but the families that she and her Billy have touched throughout the years. But I Met My Saviour is more than a sweet remembrance. I Met My Saviour is an eye-witness account of a tragedy that Kentucky, especially Brandenburg, should not forget. I Met My Saviour recounts a piece of history. I enjoyed the first half of the book but it was the last half that stirred my heart.
