I Can’t Believe I’m Not Dead by Kendra Petty is an account of her remarkable life. Petty has undergone more negative experiences than any human being should have, including being abused as a child, fighting extremely serious diseases, and being the target of a murder plot. Additionally, her parents became involved in a religious cult and Petty suffered all the associated mistreatment connected with that. When she got married, her spouse, who she discovered had a drug problem, physically abused her, including breaking her nose several times. But despite all the problems Petty faced, she managed to become a successful career woman. More importantly, she survived and continues to have an upbeat and optimistic view of life and to make positive contributions to the world.
I Can’t Believe I’m Not Dead is perfectly titled. The experiences that Petty has undergone are incredible and it’s all but a miracle that she is still alive. Kendra Petty writes with passion, and yet without a trace of self-pity, which is remarkable considering all that she’s experienced. Although Petty’s book is non-fiction, it reads like a fast-paced novel. It’s a story of sadness and tragedy, but most of all of overcoming and eventual victory. Petty writes with brutal honesty about her life and reading her book will make many people appreciate the relative lack of problems in their own lives. I highly recommend this well-written book to anyone who wants to read a tale of sorrow and misfortune, but most of all of overcoming and eventual victory.
