I Can Ski! is an adventure picture book for children, grades k-3, written by Claire McGee and illustrated by Harry Aveira. Kevin and his family are going skiing, but Kevin’s never skied before, and he’s a bit frightened by the whole idea. His big brother, Brandon, is thrilled by the prospect of getting out on the slopes, but Brandon has skied before. Brandon tries to reassure Kevin and tells him that he’s going to love the snow. Kevin’s never seen snow before. Will it be fluffy? His mom and dad are excited as well. They’ve bought all manner of gear for their adventure: goggles, jackets, pants, and thick wooly socks, to name just a few. Kevin wonders why they need so much stuff. Then the day comes when they’re scheduled to take the plane to Denver, Colorado.
Claire McGee’s I Can Ski! highlights how a young boy is able to master his fears and join the family fun on the Colorado ski slopes. The story shows him discussing the trip with his brother, flying with his mom on the plane, and participating in ski school to learn the basics. Kids can often miss out on rich and rewarding experiences due to fear of the unknown. Like Kevin, they may think they can’t do it, but pushing past that fear and lack of confidence reaps rewards beyond getting up after falling on the bunny slope and actually learning to ski. Kevin’s experiences on the slope will inform his decisions and outlook in the future as well. Harry Aveira’s illustrations are superb! I especially loved his artwork featuring the Colorado mountains, and his portrayals of Kevin and the other new skiers learning to descend are realistic and action-packed. I Can Ski! is most highly recommended.
