I Am: Empowering Littles Through Self-Talk by Enya Krieg is an unusual children’s picture book intended to encourage positive talk in children's everyday situations. The book is made exclusively from recycled materials and printed using soy inks. It is designed to teach children the practice of positive talk so that they will feel good about themselves. It contains empowering phrases like: 'I am an amazing person and I can be kind even when it’s hard.' The book also encourages children to connect with nature using phrases such as: 'I care about bugs and animals.' On the last page is a space where your child can put their picture with the encouraging phrase: 'I am wonderful just as I am!'
Enya Krieg’s I Am is a perfect gift for children so they will always look on the bright side and can put their experiences into perspective. I found the color theme of the illustrations by Nataliia Babii visually appealing, with uncluttered drawings focused on the subject. Children can internalize the empowering phrases by repeated reading of the book, which should also help them celebrate what makes them unique and encourage an enthusiastic acceptance of self. I hope that the author will also come up with a book where we can follow a little girl as she practices self-talk. This is a book that can have a major impact on children as they build their self-image and learn how to navigate their feelings. Highly recommended.
