Each child that survives the stimulus develops an extraordinary ability and is conscripted into the military for training. However, there’s a hidden truth about the war, as twelve-year-old prime cadet named Aidan is about to find out.
I AM SLEEPLESS: Sim 299 (Book 1) by Johan Twiss is a very impressive debut for its series. I was instantly fascinated by the world building. Despite the complex futuristic world, Twiss has the gift of making intricate concepts easily understandable, memorable, and highly entertaining. Each chapter has the appropriate length which goes well with the story pace and directly contributes to the plot’s flow. The eye catching cover art and the sketches complement the story well.
The characters, particularly the young prime cadets, are definitely one of the strong points of the story. Bound to a brutal system in order to ensure the survival of their people, pain and death in the training simulations becomes some sort of normality. The fact that each type of prime has their own defect that comes with their gift makes the characters more convincing. The cadets’ battle simulations were an exhilarating read and an excellent view of the Ethos military culture. I can’t wait to join Aidan and his friends in their quest to survive the military system and find out the truth about their past.
