Hungry For Touch: A Journey From Fear To Desire by Laureen Peltier is a non-fiction memoir about the author’s tormenting memory of her father taking sexual advantage of her and molesting her. Peltier has tried to forget the damaging memories, but when the sexual trauma is triggered, she realizes that she cannot keep it buried any longer. When she meets Dr. Erickson, she agrees to one year of therapy to overcome her memories, fears, and anger. Dr. Erickson is unconventional and goes about therapy and healing in unique and controversial ways. He pressures Peltier into fighting against her trauma and fears. Peltier is scared, but she is also ready to have a meaningful and healthy relationship when it comes to love, sex, and intimacy. And she knows she never will unless she can heal from the horrible issues of her past.
Hungry For Touch is a heart breaking story. It is not for the faint of heart because it deals with some truly horrible and disturbing issues. But Peltier does such a good job of explaining what happened to her and making the reader feel safe as we struggle to come to terms with the trauma at the same time as the author. I felt like I was going through the therapy with Dr. Erickson, and creating that level of immersion is not an easy feat. Kudos to Peltier for being able to pull it off. This was a strong and honest memoir that people will come to respect.
