Huh? Why? and Punch by Marc Jedel is the fifth book in the Silicon Valley Mystery series. Marty has arrived in paradise for a much-needed vacation with his loved ones. He has every intention of enjoying his downtime by putting aside any sleuthing and having a peaceful retreat. That is until a wrench is thrown into his plans after a dead body is discovered, which turns his vacation into an investigation. Instead of sun, sand, and ocean fun, Marty’s vacation sends him after a killer in a chase that reveals surprising connections to recent robberies and unearths hidden secrets. Despite the murderous turn in his plans, Marty intends to make time to spend with his family and maybe even relax.
The story quickly sets up summer vibes with huge flowers and palm trees creating an idyllic sight that greets Marty when he arrives at the Paradise Bay Resort. Marc Jedel uses specific words to draw you into this scene with colorful straws and a lazy river that quickly transforms into a construction site with a weathered building, scaffolding, and plastic. This provides the first obstacle that could ruin Marty’s perfect vacation as noisy construction threatens their peace. This is a clever opening as it sets up the lovely setting while also establishing that Marty won’t be having a simple vacation. By switching locations, Jedel explores Marty’s feelings regarding investigating murders and it is interesting to see him having reservations, despite his curiosity. His sense of pride when he’s able to help and his passion for finding answers keeps drawing him back into mysteries while creating a nice arc for him throughout. Humor is naturally woven into the story and helps maintain a lighthearted tone. The writing is witty with phrases that will make you laugh such as how dead people tend to show up in the vicinity of killers. It’s always fun to read Jedel’s mysteries and this is another winning installment for the Silicon Valley Mystery series. Huh? Why? and Punch is a vacation gone wrong when Marty stumbles upon another murder.
