How To Let Go Of Someone You Love by Julian Demarco is a non-fiction self-help book to aid readers that are ready to "Deal, Heal & Forgive After Loss." Broken down into eight distinct and interconnected chapters, Demarco leaves no stone in the arsenal of moving beyond grief unturned, no matter who it is that one is mourning. These include, but are not limited to, what it actually means to let go, digging deeply into ourselves to address the pain, making changes, rising up and moving away from guilt and isolation, accepting help and the importance of self-care, knowing we are only capable of changing our own response, and looking ahead, among many other things.
How To Let Go Of Someone You Love could not have landed in my lap at a more serendipitous moment. Julian Demarco's powerful narrative came to me in a week where the anniversary of my young mother's death coincided with myself being the exact same age she was on the day she departed this world. I have struggled with guilt as people told me I should be grateful and tucked myself away to lick my wounds in peace. I was wallowing and doing the very thing Demarco advises against, but her words and the empathy they are cloaked in were helpful. Most poignant to me and relating back to what others were telling me I should be feeling fell under chapter six, Nobody Has The Right To Tell You How To Feel. I needed this and am in the process of forgiving myself for a situation over which never I had control. This is a profoundly impactful book, and I would give it a whole bucket of stars if I could.
