How the Earth Holds Us is a collection of thought-provoking poems by Mary Holman Tuteur. The poems are inspired by her life experiences and delve into different aspects of living, including death, complex relationships between parents and children, and the unexpected nature of life. The collection takes readers on adventures to California, Cape Town, San Francisco, and Georgia, and tells stories of youthful summers, getting a driver's license, attending class, and falling in love. The poet talks about passion and desire, solitude, depression, suicide, grief, abandonment, and adoption, while also mentioning the enchanting power of horses, wild creatures, and nature. The last section of the book tells the story of her life.
How the Earth Holds Us is a beautiful collection that explores various themes through its poems. Each reader has a chance to relate to the poems in their own unique way. Mary Holman Tuteur uses her personal experiences of being adopted and losing her mother and best friend to connect with readers who may have gone through similar situations. She talks about the dark nature of life, taking readers on a journey through time and space. However, she balances the darkness with happy memories of having fun with friends and passionate ones about making love. The imagery in her poems is vivid and colorful, evoking emotions and drawing readers into the worlds she creates, making each piece come to life. The poems are divided into different categories, and each section starts with an image, which I found captivating and intriguing. I liked that the author uses simple words, making it easy to understand the poems. Overall, I enjoyed this collection and hope that many others read it and appreciate this work.
