How an Engineering Professor Becomes a Spiritual Philosopher: Diary of a 21st Century Human Soul is an autobiography by Dr. Tommy S.W. Wong. In it, he looks back on his life up to this point, including his education, professional employment, family, marriage, and his transition into an author of several books on philosophy, self-help and spirituality. Though he had no interest in traditional religions, a meditation class led him to study spirituality, including the teachings of Indian guru and philanthropist Sathya Sai Baba. It was his meetings with Sai Baba that inspired Dr. Wong to author his first non-technical publication and to consider devoting his time to writing about spirituality and philosophy. Excerpts from several books are included, and the reader is asked to consider his or her own views on the meaning of life.
In How an Engineering Professor Becomes a Spiritual Philosopher, Dr. Wong proudly shares his achievements and humbly shares his challenges and failures, to explain what these have taught him and where they have led him. Although the first three chapters moved slowly for me, the narrative style is direct and easy to understand. Dr. Wong emphasizes the concept that when things happen which seem disastrous at the time, the resulting change in your life’s direction can lead to blessings that wouldn’t otherwise have happened. “Could life be about becoming a better human being,” he asks, “a better spiritual being, and then helping to create a better world?” Viewing life this way fosters an attitude of peace, gratitude, and joy, which Dr. Wong sincerely conveys.
