Hit and Mist by Marc Jedel is the fourth book in the Silicon Valley Mystery series. Marty thought that his biggest concern was Meghan getting him to exercise until his friend Brody finds himself at the center of a murder investigation. A body is discovered and unfortunately, the evidence has the cops suspecting that Brody is the one responsible. To prove his friend’s innocence, Marty’s only option is to secretly assist the police once again. Helping Brody is easier said than done as the pool of suspects grows. Can he help his friend before the killer gets away with murder?
Marty has settled into a routine with his girlfriend Meghan, being a doting uncle, and casually assisting in murder mysteries. This balance in his life has been delicately explored since the first book, and each aspect plays a specific part in who he is. His various relationships are essential to his character development, representing how he’s evolved since the first book from his romance with Meghan to his role as an uncle. The plot is fast-paced, immediately delving into the action by setting up Brody with singed eyebrows, which is also a great scene that shows how Marc Jedel easily blends humor into the story. Humor is woven into the writing in a casual way that brings out Marty’s personality through commentary such as his thinking about how hard kickboxing is, reminding himself not to vomit on a dead body, and praising himself for how he demonstrated his ignorance. These instances help readers to understand Marty as a character while also making the murder mystery fun and lighthearted. Specific word choices add quirkiness to the tone. Hit and Mist is a charming mystery that blends humor, murder, sleuthing hijinks, and fun.
