Hide and Seek Alphabet: With Australian Animals by Anna Finch introduces young readers to many animals found in Australia. From birds to amphibians and mammals, we are acquainted with many new creatures that live on the continent. Some are well-known, while others are less familiar. Each creature in the book is searching for its family and babies. The main question is where is everyone hiding?
Hide and Seek Alphabet had me Googling regularly because there were so many animals that I as an adult haven’t ever heard of. I think it’s amazing that the author mentions all these new and endangered creatures to a young audience while teaching them the alphabet. It’s a great way to learn when the child can see things that represent each letter, whether that be an object, animal, or person. The one thing I have always loved about Australia is that it is home to some of the most unusual creatures in the world and this alphabet book showcases them brilliantly.
Not only does this book help with ABCs but also broadens the child’s vocabulary. The illustrations are beautiful and give a visual representation of each animal so even if you don’t recognize the name, you can see exactly what they look like. Anna Finch has done such a wonderful job with this book and I hope she shares more Australian wildlife with us again! It’s a book I will be recommending to my friends with children.
