Hidden Enemies is a work of fiction in the epic fantasy and adventure subgenres, and it forms the second novel in The King’s Chosen book series. It is intended for the young adult reading audience and was penned by author L. Waithman. As the story continues following the events of Blood Ties, this action-packed work of sword and sorcery style adventure sees our protagonist Lucas under threat once again, but where did the dart that poisoned him come from? An espionage mission from the king offers yet more danger with a target already on his back, but it’s the unique group of people that Lucas meets along the way who will give him the know-how and courage that he needs to stay on his path.
Author L. Waithman breaks the curse of the second novel by delivering a consistently engaging and exciting story, which is written to allow readers to jump right into mid-series, such is its satisfying plot and rich, detailed worldbuilding. Lucas leaps off the page as a protagonist that young adult readers will adore, filled with curiosity, courage, and strategic thinking. There’s something intricately political to the plot that gives it a Game of Thrones feel, but the emotional sensibilities and light-hearted sense of adventure of the young protagonist make it a speedy read that is both complex and accessible. I also found the dialogue was well balanced in this respect between the pseudo-medieval fantasy styling and a modern teen dialect. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Hidden Enemies to fans of the current series, and I cannot wait to see where it goes in the future.
