Dave W. Ball’s Hiccups Again is brightly and boldly illustrated by the graphic design service Design Pickle, with twenty pages of absolute fun for preschoolers. With scenes ranging across a wide spectrum of places (from a toy factory to a pool and water park) and activities (including camping, skiing, and visiting the moon), children can follow the cobalt-blue figure of the omnipresent and ever-cheerful Hiccups through a varied landscape. Each full-page illustration invites the child to explore both known and unknown environments, which are all introduced by a rhyming couplet, for which poetic skill the author has declared a lifelong passion.
With each new scene being accompanied by pictures of five objects for the child to find, in varying numbers, from among the vibrant range of diversely-hued animals, birds and/or stuffed toy animals shown, children from across the world are likely to want to spend hours with the book, especially when accompanied at first by an older sibling or other childminder. The interactive nature of the illustrations and text enables the child to come to a deeper understanding and appreciation of what they might otherwise only be able to see, print wise, in static pictures. Also, no surprise that the author of Hiccups Again, Dave W. Ball, is a young dad with children of his own, who knows exactly what appeals to burgeoning young minds. In short, this is a life-enhancing book that should attract a lively audience only clamoring for more!
