In Her Pacific Showdown by Mike Krentz, Captain Kate Mahoney is fighting a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband when she receives orders to report for duty aboard the aircraft carrier Shenandoah stationed in the South China Sea as the chief of staff to the Commander of the 7th Fleet. A Philippine warship arrests the crew of a Chinse fishing trawler in the contested Spratly’s archipelago. A US destroyer rams another Chinese fishing vessel and tensions flare. The US administration seeks to ease the situation, and Mahoney’s arch enemy, admiral-select LeBlanc, maneuvers to destroy her career. Chinese fighters force a top-secret P-8 Poseidon aircraft to land on a Chinese-occupied island in the South China Sea. Everything is unraveling for Captain Mahoney as she seeks to settle the custody battle, deal with LeBlanc, and find a way to retrieve the P-8.
With Her Pacific Showdown, Mike Krentz offers readers another Kate Mahoney suspense thriller. The book slowly unfolds Mahoney’s convoluted personal problems as she deals with the needs of her career; a conflict of interests as she is often away at sea. Krentz does not dwell too much on characterization, letting the unfolding dialogue carry the story, which he does in style. Several female characters dominate the novel, which in many respects leaves Captain Mahoney in a supporting role. Her Pacific Showdown is not an action drama where the US confronts China in the South China Sea, although there are several interesting moments. This book is well-written and easy to read, and many readers will find its approach entertaining. Readers keen to continue the Kate Mahoney story will no doubt relish this offering from Mike Krentz.
