In Jennifer Chase's Her Last Whisper, Katie has just started her role as a cold-case detective. After two deployments in Afghanistan, she was ready for something else, even if her undiagnosed PTSD was unwilling to release its grasp on her. Her first case was only six months old, a kidnapping. Throwing herself into the investigation, she is determined to close this one, unaware that the quest the kidnapper was pursuing was still underway. Her cold case soon becomes red hot as murder and another kidnapping ensue. Katie is determined to solve this, to unravel the clues and evidence before it is too late. But someone is watching her, leaving her strange notes - do they know more than they are willing to say or is the killer toying with her? One thing is for sure, she is determined to get to the bottom of it, and nothing will get in her way.

Her Last Whisper is an entertaining multi-faceted crime drama and the second book in Jennifer Chase's Detective Katie Scott series. While it is book number two, it works perfectly as a stand-alone read. With love, mystery, and suspense, the reader will find it easy to become engaged in Katie's investigation. This crime fiction combines romance with police investigations, life as a former soldier, and even a touch on K-9 training. Katie is a great main character with a rich and believable personality. Her commitment to the case becomes her central focus, and her determination and perseverance are just a few of her admirable qualities. I enjoyed watching everything come together as the plot takes shape, and how experience in other investigations and situations helped to shape her discovery. Clearly, tremendous effort went into ensuring this is a realistic and believable plot and setting, which is further enhanced by the talented storytelling capabilities of the author and their writing style. Mystery, intrigue, danger, will tantalize a reader's imagination in this 'can't put down' read.

Her Last Whisper is a work of crime and detective fiction penned by author Jennifer Chase. Written as the second book in the Detective Katie Scott series, this action-packed thriller sees the return of our anxiety-ridden heroine as she battles both her PTSD and a whole new mystery. When local nurse Amanda Payton is found dead, Katie uncovers a trail leading back to a case that was overlooked some weeks ago. And when a new young woman also fails to arrive at work and is linked to Amanda, Katie soon realizes that she’s uncovering a whole pattern of victims she must endeavor to save.

Gripping, emotive and highly realistic, this is a fantastic and in-depth crime mystery for fans to devour. Katie is a capable heroine, ex-military with lots of sharp mental connections made and a strong stomach, but she also has real-life struggles that many ex-military personnel have and it makes her really endearing as a central figure to investigate the mystery. Author Jennifer Chase doesn’t spoon-feed information either but lets it weave naturally into the descriptions and dialogue, allowing us as readers to piece the clues together with Katie in what is definitely a well thought out plot. The conclusions are exciting but also satisfying when all loose ends are tied up, though it makes for a harrowing journey along the way. Overall, Her Last Whisper is a fantastic and thrilling crime read which is sure to please fans of the genre for its depth and development.

In Her Last Whisper, Katie has just been promoted to lead investigator on cold cases. When one of her cold cases suddenly becomes current, Katie is plunged into revisiting the scene of a past crime to solve the recent murder of a kidnap victim whom she had interviewed only a short time before: the victim was convinced the perp was still out to get her, and she was right. Katie feels almost responsible for this victim’s death, only to end up feeling doubly bad when one of the victim’s friends also winds up dead. Then another woman goes missing. Who is the madman behind the kidnappings and deaths? Readers who like playing detective will come up with several prospects, but are they right? It will take to the end of the book to find out. And, in my case, it wasn’t who I thought it would be after all. Clever writing by Jennifer Chase.

As an avid fan of live vocal performances, I’ve come to realize that the most pleasurable and memorable shows are those where artists are enjoying themselves as much as their audiences do. When it comes to novels, that analogy applies to the author of Her Last Whisper, Jennifer Chase. This is the third novel that Chase has created around the character of Detective Katie Scott, and she is succeeding in making her fans enjoy her creative deliveries as much as she enjoys writing them. Her Last Whisper is an engaging and very easy read. Dialogue is plentiful, keeping the pace moving. Chase loves building suspense through short chapters and is detailed in her descriptions of settings. As Katie chases down leads and clues, readers get a good insight into how such detective work can eventually uncover the truth. Toss in some realistic characterization that helps us feel what Katie and those around her are feeling, and you have a finely written detective mystery. Enjoy!

Jennifer Chase gives readers a delicious, pulse-pounding ride in Her Last Whisper, Chase’s latest exciting crime thriller featuring her plucky protagonist, Katie Scott (after Little Girls Sleeping). Detective Katie Scott is returning to work at the Pine Valley Sheriff’s Department after a brief sabbatical, ready to head up the department’s cold case unit. First on her radar is an unlikely cold case that happened a little over six months earlier. It involved the abduction and assault of Amanda Payton, a nurse at the local hospital. Found bleeding and disoriented by two patrolmen, Amanda had kept muttering that she’d told the truth but with the few leads having turned into dead ends, the case had gone cold. Intrigued, Katie eventually tracks down a very frightened Amanda and promises to find her abductor but shortly after their meeting, Amanda is found murdered and another girl is abducted…

Jennifer Chase has created a great protagonist in Katie Scott. With a few years as a patrol officer and four as an Army K9 handler under her belt, Scott knows how to work a case. Detail-oriented and able to think outside the box, she’s like a determined bloodhound on the hunt for her quarry, with her faithful dog, Cisco, at her side. What makes Katie so relatable, though, is her vulnerability as she struggles to keep her PTSD in check while she’s working the case. Chase takes us through the paces in Her Last Whisper, throwing us the odd clue every now and then while managing to ratchet up the suspense through a few well-placed phrases. Having said that, the plot is also solid and the pacing well-executed. Unlike many crime novels of the same ilk, the author doesn’t exploit gratuitous violence which is a refreshing change. Her Last Whisper is one of those books that hook you in from the start and won’t let you go until the last paragraph has been read, leaving you primed for the next book in the series.
