Hear the Crickets is the first book in The Gibborim Series by B.J. Sheldon. For over three hundred years, Skyy has tried to kill herself countless times, but when you are immortal, it doesn’t seem to work out so well. Having to hide herself away all of these years, due to the wings sprouting out of her back, Skyy has only one friend, Sean, a human she trusts with her secret and her life. After seeing a vision of a giant skeleton with wings, Skyy rushes to paint what she had seen inside her mind before Sean arrives at her studio. Moments later, five strangers arrive to kill her. While she is fighting for her life, determined to keep Sean safe, twins Dorian and Lillith arrive and are clearly there to save her. Skyy learns that she is the Chosen One, as the Hybrids who had just saved her give her a crash course in heavenly history. Skyy’s wings, however, are a mystery and, without knowing who her father is, one that may never be solved. When Skyy learns of the secret weapon which had been entrusted to her mother before she perished, Skyy knows that she must find it and keep it from falling into the hands of those who could ultimately bring about the destruction of Earth itself.
I found the initial installment to The Gibborim Series to be outstanding. The storyline is so intricately told as Skyy pieces together all of the unknowns from her past in order to fight off an evil bigger than she had ever thought possible. I love the humor which has been injected in small doses at exactly the right moments, as well as the romantic element which is introduced during the first battle. B.J. Sheldon’s imagination is creative, bringing about a story that is as old as time itself. The action begins from the very first page and is non-stop through to the end. I very much enjoyed Hear the Crickets and recommend it to all readers who enjoy action, adventure, drama, mystery, and a touch of romance in an all-out war between good and evil.
