He Will Scream, He Will Shout! by Jenny Dew is a children’s picture book about the challenges of adoption. Adoption is never an easy thing for the adoptive parents, adoptive siblings, and the adopted child. Freddy has never felt so secure and loved before, which prompts the fear of losing all he has come to love, causing tantrums and outbursts. As his family navigates through Freddy’s confusion, they must find another way for him to express his emotions. The story aims to guide adoptive families through a healing journey with their adopted children.
Jenny Dew's He Will Scream, He Will Shout! discusses the sensitive topic of adoption and the ups and downs of finding a family. I like that it offers young readers the big feelings that can be confusing and frustrating when being adopted, mainly the happiness of seeing a loving family and the fear of losing this newfound happiness. However, it shows that it is okay to have these big feelings and that there are other ways to express emotions. I loved that it also focuses on how the entire family plays a role in helping Freddy feel accepted and loved in his new home, teaching children that it is a team effort. The illustrations are wonderfully done; they perfectly depict the storyline and the characters’ expressions. This book is perfect for parents and their children struggling with the difficulties of adoption, showing that love, patience, and compassion can strengthen familial relationships.
