Grape Leaves by Martin Guilfoos is a murder mystery about a seasoned detective, a rookie, and the bond they form to solve a mind boggling case. Jack Martin is the seasoned detective whose partner Chip has just retired. Jimmy Williams is the young brash detective who will now become Jack’s new partner. The case they are assigned runs deep with ties to Homeland Security, senators and drug dealers. Jack and Jimmy follow leads that have them traveling around Florida, from Tampa down to the Keys and as far as Virginia. They discover several murder victims with ice picks as the weapon of choice, fishing boats being used to transport drugs, dive shops not what they appear to be, and so much more before the twists and turns lead to the conclusion.
I found it impossible to put Grape Leaves down and each time I was sure I had the answer, there was another turn in the case. Martin Guilfoos has written an intriguing book using current events, police work, mystery, suspense and fiction in a perfect combination. Grape Leaves took me through the case from the assignment to the finish, and placed me right alongside the detectives. Guilfoos is a gifted writer that brought the pages of his book to life. Grape Leaves had me sitting on the edge of my chair and holding my breath more than once as Jack and Jimmy faced dangerous situations, perilous conditions and near death. I highly recommend this book; it will be a winner.
