God's Gift of Kindness: Bella Learns To Be Kind (Fruits of the Spirit), written and illustrated by George Toolan, is about a child named Bella, who is a banana, and who is making all-too-human mistakes. For example, she made fun of her friends or took away their toys. But one day her parents sat down with her and explained that Jesus in the Bible wants her to be kind to others. So Bella asked Jesus to help her and tried to treat others more kindly. She found out that it felt good to treat others with kindness. Although sometimes Bella still made mistakes, she was learning how to act more positively and kindly. The book is based on the New Testament book of Galatians, chapter 5, verses 22 and 23.
God's Gift of Kindness is both a charming and instructive book. Although it is written for Christian children and parents, its lessons apply to everyone. Author George Toolan clearly has a love for children and wants to help them learn to treat others with kindness. In the illustrations, Toolan wisely used pieces of fruit to represent the characters in the story. That will create interest in young readers and make for fun reading for everyone. Toolan targets the book at ages 4 to 8 and those are the ages it will most appeal to. However, children of all ages will enjoy it. I recommend this book to young readers, along with their parents and grandparents. It would also be good for churches and religious schools.
