Geronimo Must Die by J.R. Lindermuth opens with a bang, literally. When a sniper takes a shot at Geronimo as he stands outside his wickiup, Mickey Free, the half-Apache/half Irish Scout is there and saves his life again. As before, Geronimo doesn’t express gratitude, but that’s okay because Mickey doesn’t mind - he sees a beautiful girl and promptly falls in love. Rumors are swirling and Mickey decides to attempt to discover who is behind the plot for so many of the young people to leave the reservation. He soon learns the leader is known as the Prophet. Going undercover, Mickey is determined to learn the Prophet’s real identity and put a stop to his plans before another all-out war against the white eyes erupts. Completing his mission will depend on him staying alive, something that may prove to be very hard to do. But, he’s determined to get it done.

In Geronimo Must Die, J.R. Lindermuth has put together a well plotted tale. In this story told in first person, the reader follows along as the main character, Mickey Free, risks everything to stop a mass migration from the reservation, and to save countless lives. In the story, the author brings to light the harsh lives of those forced to live on the reservation, with all its deception, lies, and corruption. I found this story to be very enjoyable and informative, right up there with Tony Hillerman’s stories of the Navajo, of which I am a great fan. I really enjoyed this book. Nicely done by this author.
