Garrett is a little bear and for a couple of months, his only goal was to be the rock-climbing champion. When he did not win the competition, he was so discouraged that he did not want to try again, despite the insistence of his parents. However, the following year there was a new event. How did Garrett deal with this situation? Garrett Bear Learning From Failure talks about an experience that both children and adults must go through on many occasions. K. Tang has years of involvement in education and with this book, she has found a way to help children talk about failure. It includes a guide at the end so that adults can help children with feelings in similar situations.
The illustrations are beautiful, express a great deal of affection, and they also make excellent use of a somber color palette that creates a timeless fairy tale look. I loved the analogy of the road to success as described during the story because it explains the idea in a very caring and stimulating way. Garrett Bear Learning From Failure shows the compassion and the unconditional support of parents for their children. The book is very helpful as it provides insight and shows that we may feel disagreement, sadness, or frustration, which is the beginning of the recovery process. Failure is an experience that we all must endure. It was very encouraging to read how K. Tang teaches children to cope with either failure or a bad experience and how to calm their emotions.
