In Fur Elise by author PeggySue Wells, we find protagonist Michael Northington at a loose end. His beliefs have been shattered by the death of his friend, a death for which he takes some responsibility. He needs to escape, to find some peace away from the life he’s now cynical of. When he finds a small cottage for rent in the quiet island community of St. Croix and begins to teach scuba lessons, he feels he may have found the perfect solution. And Elise, the woman who rents out the cottage, gives him plenty of space. She’s involved in a budding romance with a beau from her childhood, and is basically uninterested in the comings and goings of her tenant. But when Michael’s military buddies arrive on the island, needing his help, and he finds himself opening up to Elise more and more, it seems that they both may need each other more than they ever knew.
Fur Elise is a very engaging read. Mystery, intrigue and quite a dash of romance are all contained within this novel, and author PeggySue Wells’ wonderful storytelling abilities come through strongly. Her writing style is dynamic and her ability to develop characters that are three dimensional, likable, and people the reader will genuinely care about is second to none. Fur Elise is a book that would appeal to any reader who enjoys a thrilling read with a great deal of romance or anyone looking for just a great read in general. I highly recommend this book, and hope that PeggySue Wells is hard at work on her next work in this vein as we speak.
