From New York to the Smokies: A Collection of Sam Jenkins Mysteries by Wayne Zurl is a series of short stories that covers more than 40 years in Sam's life. The first story starts in 1963 with Sam as a teenager. With his girlfriend and a friend, he tries to stop a murder plot and keep his father out of trouble. The next story finds Sam as a lieutenant, 20 years on, running an unofficial investigation into why a colleague isn’t happy with her promotion. What he uncovers is beyond anything he ever expected. The next three stories follow Sam as he works to solve more crimes in Prospect. He solves the mysteries of a couple of UFO sightings, a brutal massacre, and catches a serial killer, all in a day’s work for Sam Jenkins.
From New York to the Smokies: A Collection of Sam Jenkins Mysteries by Wayne Zurl is a neatly packaged book, five stories following the life of Sam Jenkins before and after he joined the police force. Having never read any of the Sam Jenkins books, this was a nice introduction for me. It gave me some insight into the man and his life and made me want to read the full length novels. Each story is written in a masterful way, each one a little mystery of its own. There is plenty of action in each one, enough to give you a taster of what the main novels will be like. I think that, being a book of short stories, there is something here that will suit most types of readers and these are perfect for when you have a few minutes to kill. Wayne Zurl is an excellent writer and I now want to read his other books.
