From a Distance by Eileen Hare-Scott is a historical novel that offers readers a wonderful story that begins in 1898 England. Florence Dewhurst refuses to marry the man her rich and domineering father wants for her, a man who is old enough to be her father. Instead, she elopes with the love of her life, the same man who has been a tenant farmer for her father; Raymond Oakfield. Follow the story of these two souls as they face every challenge to stay together and build a family. But they will get separated on their journey to Australia to start a new life under very tragic circumstances. Florence will arrive at their destination, alone and pregnant. With the desire to give her child a chance in life, she offers him up for adoption and signs a contract. But although things work out well for her, she can’t break the terms of the contract. Now, she can only watch her son grow up from a distance.
This is a well-written and gritty story of love and loss, with a powerful setting in England and Australia. It is heartbreaking to read about the challenges the young couple goes through and their determination to succeed in life. The scenes are beautifully crafted and readers can feel the emotional intensity of the story. Eileen Hare-Scott has a great gift for plot and character and she does an awesome job in recreating life at the time this story is set, and readers can also get a feel of the setting through the well-written dialogues. From a Distance is a moving story told in a voice that is strong and prose that is elegant. It will rouse the reader’s hidden emotions while allowing them to connect with the memorable characters.
