Freak of Nature by Julia Crane is a young-adult sci-fi novel liberally steeped in romance. It also has the makings of a super hero origin story. Kaitlyn has no memory of her past; all she knows is the sterile white halls of the cleverly named IFICS compound, being poked and prodded by scientists, having the robotic side of her cyborg body undergo numerous upgrades, and... Lucas. But she can't reveal her feelings to Lucas; she can't reveal her feelings to anybody, not unless she wants them taken away from her by people hoping to make her into a super lethal government weapon. It isn't until she accidentally lets slip a hint of her emotions that Lucas reveals that he is attracted to her as well and together they make plans for her to escape the IFICS and decide her own fate.
Freak of Nature is a super fast read. Once you've fallen for the gorgeous cover, Freak of Nature sucks you in and refuses to let go until the last page. As I was reading Freak of Nature, it made me think of Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza, though the main character of Driza's novel was completely robotic while Kaitlyn was originally human. Still, I think fans of either author will enjoy both books. Freak of Nature also reminded me of a super hero origin tale because, after Kaitlyn discovers that she died saving a woman from an attacker, she decides to use her superhuman talents to help other women who may be trapped in less than ideal situations. A great read for anyone looking for a light sci-fi novel with tons of romantic elements.
