Fragments of Yesterday is a young adult mystery novel by MeeLayo. Andrew Donald wakes up to find himself in an unknown location devoid of most of his memories and talking to Dr. Thompson, who encourages him to revive his memories. Soon, Andrew goes down memory lane to 1994, when he was a high school senior, an anomaly who belonged to no traditional clique. Andrew and his friends navigated the challenging terrain of teenage life with street car racing, young love, and pranks, becoming the school's premier rebels. Andrew falls in love with a girl named Lacey and has a fierce rival in the form of the school bully, Donny Tullard. However, after graduation, a tragic event changes Andrew's life forever. In the present day, he battles with life and death. Will he survive?
A coming-of-age tale sprinkled with a slight tinge of mystery, Fragments of Yesterday is perfectly suited for young adult and adult readers alike. With a powerful combination of nostalgia and romance, MeeLayo delivers an engaging story that keeps its hooks in you with a teasing mystery taking its time to unfold. The characters talk and act as you'd expect from teenagers in the 90s, and the little friendships and romances feel like the beating heart of the narrative. Andrew and Lacey's relationship is adorable, and both characters complement each other very well. I also enjoyed the street racing thread of the story, although the ending is somewhat bittersweet. The scientific elements of the story come as a pleasant surprise and would definitely appeal to sci-fi readers. All in all, this is an entertaining book for young adult readers.
