Forgotten Americans Who Made History is written by Tammy Gagne. A female spy in 1839 by the name of Mary Elizabeth Bowser was a freed slave as well as a spy who sent Ulysses S. Grant some valuable information during the war. Discover the history behind the televisions that have no moving parts. Philo T. Farnsworth, who loved science for as long as he could remember, patented his apparatus in 1930. Don’t forget Dave Kopay, the first openly gay athlete who withstood ridicule and discrimination over his sexual orientation. Take a moment to remember Sybil Ludington, Colonel Henry’s daughter, who made a midnight ride longer than Paul Revere’s although for much the same purpose.
Forgotten Americans Who Made History is a very enlightening book full of stories about people in history that are rarely if ever mentioned in the average history books. Tammy Gagne has filled in some interesting gaps concerning several people throughout history including an African American young woman who refused to give up her seat for a white man before Rosa Parks did. I love the in-depth history of the famous events that were unknown before now. The Watergate scandal is one such event that was discovered by Frank Willis, a security guard at the Watergate building at the time of the burglary. There is a whole lot more history in this book and I hope that Gagne has many more like this, full of history that many people don’t think to ask about. I recommend Forgotten Americans Who Made History to anyone who loves to read about or teach history.
