Forgiveness by Sabrina Steward is a work of fiction but the story is real to a lot of women. Despite having a difficult home life, Sofia is enjoying her life at high school. When she graduates and starts college she meets Justin. At first Justin is all that she dreamed of. It is not until later that Sofia finds herself alone and faced with a difficult decision.

In Forgiveness, Steward takes on the difficult subject of abortion. Abortion is never an easy topic to write about, but Steward does a great job by writing about it through a young girl’s eyes. Steward tells the story of Sofia and how she came to the difficult decision to have an abortion. I thought the character of Sofia was very mature. She was hardworking and always tried to stay busy. I saw a little of myself in her character with her refusal to leave Justin in spite of all of his issues. Yes, her pregnancy was an accident, but Sophia knew that she was not at a place in her life where she could raise a child on her own.

The reason that Steward told Sofia’s story is written in her introduction of the book. The reason is something I agree with 100%. For far too long women have not been able to make their own choices and when they do, they are shamed and judged. It is easy to judge when you have not been in that person’s shoes. At a time when Planned Parenthood is constantly being attacked in the media, this book could not come out at a better time. I enjoyed reading Sophia’s story and seeing why she made the choice that she did. I recommend all women to read this story.
