Forever Mine by Charlene Raddon is a historical romance taking place at the turn of the 20th century. Ariah Scott flees after the death of her father to become a mail-order bride for a man she has never met. Fearing her uncle is on her trail, she arrives in Oregon and is picked up at the train station by her intended’s uncle, Bartholomew Moon, the keeper at the lighthouse where Ariah’s fiancé, Prichard Scott, is assistant keeper. However, when delays to their journey leave them stranded at a cabin for a week, Ariah and Bart realize there is a budding attraction they can no longer ignore, despite the fact each is with another. Fighting their desires, Bart and Ariah arrive back at the lighthouse, where Bart’s spiteful wife and Ariah’s moony fiancé live. Are Ariah and Bart doomed to a life longing for another?
Forever Mine by Charlene Raddon is a quick read, with two very complex main characters at its core. Although feeling frustrated with Bart on occasion, I did admire his principles as he fought to stay loyal to his wife, Hester, even though she is a bitter, manipulative woman. Ariah is almost too innocent a character, which did trouble me on occasion; however, I did admire her intelligence. Perhaps my one criticism was the pursual of Ariah by her uncle. Throughout the novel, there is a foreshadowing of this mysterious uncle. I wish there were more “close calls” for Ariah through the course of the novel. Yet, this did not overly disrupt my enjoyment of the story as a whole, and it was very interesting to learn some of the history of the lighthouse at the end of the novel.
