Forbidden War by D.C. Gomez is the third book in The Intern Diaries series. What Isis thought was to be an ordinary trip to the cemetery with Eugene turns into an abrupt introduction to a couple of gnomes and their troll guard. She soon learns that now she's been an intern for a year, Texarkana has become a haven. As if that wasn't enough on her plate, Death's brother War gets in contact with them about a war he didn't permit between the elves and the vampires. Isis is given the task of attending a treaty between both sides and having to locate the missing elf princess who happens to be engaged to the vampire heir. Isis believes the princess is in trouble so she turns to a new ally for help but, even working together, she doesn't know if they can find the princess before it's too late.
Isis is a spunky protagonist who used to be in the military and has a thing against reading her manual (that is if she could find it) which gives her a light and breezy personality while also showing her intelligence, strong-willed attitude, and capability. D.C. Gomez breathes life into this unique story with engaging characters, an unusual mission, and plenty of quirky situations. The latest story is full of surprises for Isis starting with why Eugene wanted to go to the cemetery and meeting a couple of gnomes, then building up to her mission where she's playing the neutral party between two factions that hate each other. You never know what to expect or where the next turn will take Isis. The characters are delightful with each possessing charm and quirkiness which pair perfectly with the zany plot.
Gomez has a created a world where anything is possible and a plot where Isis interns for Death (one of the four horsemen), works alongside a twelve-year-old genius and a talking cat and happens to know the devil on a first name basis. The plot is eccentric and outrageous in all the best ways which makes every moment so much fun to read. Gomez weaves in all sorts of magical creatures with gnomes, trolls, vampires, elves, and witches all making an appearance in a variety of unexpected ways. From the first page, you won't be able to put Forbidden War down as Gomez delivers a spectacular adventure with eccentric situations, delightful missions, and fun characters.
