Set in a time when King Richard and Prince John fought over England’s throne, Barbara Bettis brings us For This Knight Only. Sir Roark of Stoddard fought to bring his king back to the realm. In one battle he loses the land he was promised, the men he captained, and his good name because of the man he was sworn to serve. Lord Martin of Cantleigh had secretly organized an ambush for King Richard and in a split second Roark had to choose his king or his liege lord. Lady Alyss of Chauvere was fighting her own battle; her father was ill and her castle was being overtaken by the neighboring lord. Her brother, Sir Henry, was one of King Richard’s most trusted warriors. In his absence, Lady Alyss looks like easy prey. Roark takes fate into his own hands and tries his luck with Alyss.
Through an intricate weaving of characters, battles, and espionage, Barbara Bettis creates For This Knight Only. Her edgy precision sets the pace as Roark must convince Alyss to marry him. I felt I was entering a world where Barbara Bettis magnified one territory and a fight for love and land. The spy within the land was captivating as the knowledge they held was known by few. I loved how Alyss was strong and independent yet knew when to pick her battles. Roark’s arrogance was just a mixture of confidence and his own insecurities. The author adds suspense as these two characters work out their differences and struggle to protect their castle. This is a brilliant romance woven with deception and devotion.
