Florian the Fly Flies to Florida by Petra Szmykowski-Britton is about the cutest little German fly named Florian. Florian likes to sneak through the window of a nice family in the area and hide in the curtains. He really likes Grandma Else, even though she doesn't like pesky flies. Florian does not like cold weather and wants to go to a warmer climate. When Grandma Else's triplet granddaughters visit, they take a trip to Florida to see their aunt, and guess what Florian does? That's right, he hitches a trip to Fort Lauderdale by hiding in their belongings. But Florida was nothing like he expected. He was separated from the girls, it was hot and humid, he was all alone. That is until he found a wonderful fountain of water that made him feel so good. Could it be the Fountain of Youth he has heard about?
I will never look at a fly the same way again. Florian wanted to be in a warm climate so badly, it was sad when he was blown away from the girls. But he came upon many animals he hadn't seen before and he was excited about seeing them and forming friendships. I did enjoy the animals on Florian's journey and the important things they were doing. I think Camila the butterfly is my favorite because she is such a good friend. And I love the beautiful artwork by Luz Nicte Stoffer. The German look of the pictures fits the story well. The vibrant and colorful scenery is lovely, and the adorable animals are amazing as they work together to bring the story to life. Florian the Fly Flies to Florida by Petra Szmykowski-Britton is a unique book because it is in German and English. This is a great teaching tool to teach children and adults German.
