Flight of the Raven (The Novels of Ravenwood Book 1) by Judith Sterling introduces Lady Emma of Ravenwood, who is more than happy to oblige her king and marry Norseman William L’Orage. However, he must respect her one wish - that she never falls pregnant. A family curse plagues the Ravenwood name, where every noble Ravenwood lady will die in childbirth unless the child is conceived in true love. However, when William arrives, Emma finds herself drawn to the dark handsome stranger in a way she can’t describe or understand. William hides his secret past and a vow never to love again. Yet, there is something about Lady Emma that he cannot resist. Will the couple be able to overcome the otherworldly forces against them, or is the curse doomed to be repeated?
Set in northern England in the early 1100s, Flight of the Raven by Judith Sterling reminded me of the earlier works of authors such as Virginia Henley, one of my favorite historical romance authors. Although the book was a quick read, I found myself easily drawn into the period as well as the lives of the characters. The historical touches were woven in nicely and didn’t detract from the storyline. I particularly enjoyed the added elements of mysticism that were still present at the time, as well as the healing practices of Lady Emma. The antagonists had just the right amount of evil; however, it would have been good to see some of that drawn out, as it was quite obvious from the beginning what would happen toward the end. Still, it didn’t detract too much from my enjoyment of the novel and I am curious to see how the series progresses.
