Jenna Wyatt finally did it. She achieved her dream of opening a café that sells her baked goods close to her dream flat. That should have been her happily ever after, but not in A.A. Abbott's psychological thriller Flat White Lies. But small businesses are not easy to handle. She is barely staying afloat due to inflation, but her ex demands a huge amount of money that will cost her the shop or the flat. And she is not willing to give up either of them. One of her usual customers offers to rent her spare rooms. It is the only outcome she can find, so she accepts it despite her co-worker's mistrust and the customer's rude teenager. While living together, some things about her tenants do not add up. Discoveries turn Jenna's life upside down, and a woman found drowned in the canal makes her wonder if someone she knows is the killer. Can she save her business without losing her life?
A.A. Abbott manages to build an incredible psychological thriller. Flat White Lies maintains the right amount of suspense while revealing enough information to keep readers engaged. Abbott achieves this through multiple POVs - they offer crucial details while leaving the main character in the dark. As a result, the changing points of view give the right pace to the book, and the story moves smoothly through the events. The main character is a strong woman capable of handling things herself and who is not afraid to accept help. As for the side characters, each of them provides a unique environment to set the novel's atmosphere. Abbott finds a balance between an enigmatic thriller and an addictive quick pace, making it the perfect summer read.
