Five Minutes to Impact: The Final Flight of the Comanche is the dramatic true story of the miraculous survival by three men of the crash landing of a small airplane in the rural countryside of Kansas. It’s told in minute detail by the pilot, businessman David F. Osborne, who discusses not only the sudden emergency that he and his travelers faced, but the details of his life leading up to it, and the impact of that event on the rest of his life. It’s written from a position of faith as a Christian, but thoroughly addresses the technical aspects of the airplane, the flight, and the mechanical failure that forced a landing where there was no airfield nearby. Several appendices provide technical information about the aircraft and the crash event which will be of interest to pilots as well as other readers. Photographs bring the reality of the event home to the reader, while bits of humor are sprinkled throughout.
Five Minutes to Impact: The Final Flight of the Comanche is engagingly written. You don’t have to be a pilot to understand it, as Osborne goes to great lengths to explain technical matters in laymen’s terms and to give a good background. He divides the book into two parts. In the first, he addresses the accident, the results of the accident investigation, and the process of recovery from injuries and mental stress. In the second part, Osborne offers a religious perspective about life framed in terms of his near-death experience. Short passages from the scriptures are quoted throughout the book as well. This is an interesting story on many levels.
