The adventure-packed middle-grade story Fishing for Luck by Murray Richter follows a boy’s exhilarating escapades with his friends. In the story, he deals with daunting challenges in his life. At first, the only things on Kevin’s mind are his memorable fishing trips with his friends, their fun, creative games, and planning pranks on each other. But when his friend’s mean ex-stepdad shows up again, Kevin is reminded of the past when Ted blackmailed him. He tries to handle the situation by himself while figuring out how to navigate his parents’ growing conflicts. Ted, his friend’s stepdad, becomes more demanding, and his home situation worsens. As he tries to cope with the changes and keep his family together, Kevin must protect his younger sister from Ted.
Fishing for Luck addresses crucial topics such as war and parental conflict in a style to which children can relate. Kevin and his friend, Rudy, experience conflict in their homes, and Kevin has a conversation with his friends about it. The story is written from the friends’ perspective, which helps young readers connect with the characters and their experiences. It also contains impactful lessons regarding how to handle challenges, the need to reach out to other people, and to ask questions before drawing conclusions. The scenes are immersive and include exciting events and conversations. The heavier aspects of the story are balanced by humorous dialogue between the characters.
